What’s Changing?

Historically, Illinois utilities have provided full retail rate credits for excess energy generated by residential and small commercial solar projects. This means that if your solar PV system produces more energy than you use, you’ve been able to receive credits at the full retail rate of electricity. However, under the new CEJA regulations, from 2025 onward, this full retail rate net metering will be replaced with a credit based solely on the electricity supply rate.

Why Does This Matter?

For those planning to install solar PV systems, this change means that any installations connected to the grid in ComEd, Ameren Illinois, or MidAmerican territories after December 31, 2024, will not benefit from the full retail rate net metering. Instead, excess energy will only earn credits at the supply rate, which is significantly lower.

What Should You Do?

To make sure you maximize your solar investment and take advantage of the current full retail rate net metering, it’s essential to have all required documentation submitted to your utility by 5 p.m. C.T. on December 13, 2024. This includes the Certificate of Completion or the Witness Test Request.
