Hotels use more energy than you may think, and with asphalt shingle roofs, they make for very efficient and cost effective solar PV projects as well. This project, located at the Sleep Inn in Naperville, IL, also operates on a municipal utility grid. There is a common misconception that it is difficult to go solar in municipal utilities or co-ops. But that isn’t true. Working with smaller utilities can be a challenge due to unique applications and rules, but good communication can typically overcome those obstacles, as it did here. We hope to provide solar energy to more hotels in the near future.
